The Push and The Pull

I got to thinking about the people that I have had the good fortune to work with over the past three years and what led them to a conversation with me. And I thought about the push and the pull that occurs that mobilises us beyond our inertia and gets us moving.

Even if you are not in real estate, but are thinking of embarking on anything, this little message is still worth reading. There is a lesson here for any path that we embark on in life.

I was thinking about when the push is present, but the pull is not and how different outcomes can be when we move with both a push and a pull.

Let’s have a simplified example of our owlet in a nest in the cover photo.

At some time, a baby bird needs to leave its nest. And you can be sure that the parent birds at some stage begin to push. They might start off by cutting off the food source, or at least reducing it. They might make the baby bird unwelcome by pushing it off to the side at night time. No more cuddles.

Eventually the parent will give the baby bird a proper push out of the nest, and stop feeding it.
If the timing is right, at the same time there has been a pull going on. There is a genetic urge for the fledgling to fly, feathers have formed. It kind of wants to leave its parents’ nest and to go out in the world and make a nest of its own.

If this story is a success, the push and the pull happen at the same time. The parents push the baby out of the nest, the biological pull is in place, the young bird flies off and the raising of this chick has been a success.

Of course, if the parental push has happened too early and there is no pull going on yet – no feathers, an inability to feed itself, no desire to fly… unless there is some incredibly good fortune and support there is likely to be an unsuccessful outcome.

For me in my role here, I want to see successful outcomes. I want to spot that situation, maybe trust my intuition, and where I think there is an abundance of push and deficit of pull ask people, ‘Is this really what you want to do?’

I think we need to also make sure we are not kidding ourselves when embarking in any new direction.
