Building your team and building yourself.
We are in the middle of a pretty tough winter of real estate’ says just about everyone I am speaking to at the moment. Even after over 20 years in the business it still surprises me when we get to winter and just how long it can be between drinks some years.
So it may seem strange to be thinking about building a team.
But really, this comes down to making sure that we are doing the high value activities that are going to lead to our business growing. And to us growing as well.
Over the past few months I have been getting more and more aware that as we (Independent Agent) have grown, more of my time is being taken up with things that while are very important, are not going to grow my business. I am spending less time doing the things that are really going to push business forward. If I allow this to continue, I will get to the limit of what I can do. Our fun, innovative, business may stop being fun and innovative..
Here is another way to look at it… We can do tasks that are worth (say) hundreds of dollars, but we could be doing things worth thousands.
I see this happening with successful sales people when they get to a certain level of activity and suddenly their days are filled with tasks that, while essential, are not going to make a big impact on their business.
There are lots of ways to do this, but over the past few weeks I have been making notes on the following:
- Activities I am good at but don’t enjoy
- Things I am good at, enjoy, but don’t push business forward
- Tasks I feel obliged to do but don’t serve a higher purpose
- Jobs I am hopeless at and don’t enjoy
We live in a time of overseas workers, of contractors, of digital nomads, and of AI.
Chances are for a smaller fee than you may expect, some of those tasks that fall into the above categories might be available to be outsourced for less than you think.
I challenge you, as we ride out the rest of winter, to put some thought into this, and start making a list that you can turn into a job description when the time is right.
Magic and growth happen when you are able to free yourself from those tasks described above and open your days to more hours of the higher level, high income producing work that you are more than capable of, but which has been put on the back burner for urgent, important, but non-lucrative tasks.
And if you are already leading a team, try the same for your team members. Allowing them the opportunity to grow and delegate can open another whole world of opportunity.
