Leading and Scrutiny

If we are going to lead, we had better be ready to be scrutinised.

The recent demonstration of this was all over all media with some ‘unlucky’ tech folk at a Coldplay concert. But this scrutiny applies to you and I as well.

We are now working in a space where our moves are being recorded by our clients, where we leave a digital footprint behind after every interaction and transaction. And while most of the day to day things we do are not going to register too much interest, the moment a foot is put wrong we can almost be certain that someone, somewhere has a record of it.

And when I think about it, as we have our names all over the internet, all over signboards and billboards, and hold millions of dollars worth of other people’s investments in our care, we are all leaders. We are leaders in marketing and negotiation. We strive to be leaders in our market. To think of ourselves as anything less is minimising what we do, and therefore doing our clients a disservice.

More is expected of us. We are expected to conduct ourselves morally, professionally, politically and ethically in certain ways. We will be judged more intensely for what we do or do not do.

So fellow leaders, firstly, can we start believing that we are leaders.

Secondly I think that the idea of getting our house in order is a great one. We need to each hold ourselves to a high standard because much is entrusted to us. We need to ensure that when we do what we do, it is coming from a place of honesty and integrity, and should we become the focus of a Kiss Cam – or anything else, we are able to withstand the scrutiny.
