Happy New Year v2.0

It’s 8.30am and there is an unusual sound in the house. Well to be more accurate, a lack of sound.

I can feel my shoulders drop. Hang on, there is a noise… oh, birdsong and cicadas. I might make myself a coffee, and go to my office and do some work.

The silence is of course the sound of children going back to school. It feels like I get to start the year all over again. Happy New Year 2024, version 2.0.

In our weekly meeting this week I talked about the importance of building your own brand in business. Over the past month I have sat on the sidelines watching some changes in our industry.

There is a national brand that has been sold and is rebranding. Some of the salespeople and business owners in this company are happy and will go with the flow. Others are not. If you are not up to date, see the media release here.

There is also a group of yellow offices that has tried to turn into a blue office, and from what I can see has not been overly successful in that change over… the yellow office people didn’t want to be blue and so they went and found other places where they could continue to work the yellow way.

Elsewhere in the country there is a group of blue offices that are changing to yellow offices, and the salespeople in this case seem to think that for the most part it’s easier just to go with the flow and change brands. A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

In all of these cases there is a lot more to it than ‘brand’. The underlying structures and the people in the background of the businesses are what is making people decide whether to stay or go. ‘What’s in it for Me’ also plays a role.

We are all in the real estate business either as business owners or as independent contractors who sell, or a combination of both.

Reputation, performance, longevity, results are what count, and letting the public know about it in an appropriate manner. We can have all of these things regardless of which flag colour we fly.

Moral of the story? When it comes to brands, it’s your brand that counts.
