Right Place. Right Time. Wrong Perspective.

Sometimes, there is more than one way of getting a better handle of what is going on in your world while making life that little bit easier and improving the quality of your output.

I took myself off early on Sunday morning to try and snag a few waves. I wasn’t early enough to be the first in the water, but the plan was I would be early enough to beat the crowds and get back in time for other Sunday activities.

Te Arai beach is on the East Coast just below Mangawhai. It tilts slightly to the North, and so an easterly swell direction will seem to come in on an angle from ‘down’ the beach, and in this case, straight out of the morning sun. Stunningly beautiful, however an hour or so in as the sun picked up its intensity, I noticed I was doing an awful lot of squinting into the sun.  It was a little bit difficult to gauge what was coming in the glare. Sun strikes out on the water!

Once I noticed what was going on I tried a quick position change. If I turned my back a bit more on the sun and allowed it to come across my shoulder, would I still be able to spot the swells coming, even if they too would be appearing from slightly over my shoulder?

The answer was yes. There was a marked reduction in glare and I could still track the waves as they came up. Right Place, Right Time, Right Perspective. Because I could see, I was able to line up the waves better, and spend more time surfing, less time just paddling about!

AND what about Right Equipment.

A few summers back I had a cap that was secured under my chin. It was a game-changer for sun strike! The chin strap tore and I never replaced it… I think that a cap would have also dealt with the issue really nicely.

Sometimes, there is more than one way of getting a better handle of what is going on, and making life that little bit easier on yourself, without compromising any of your output quality.

Have a great week out there. The weather looks great for an early start to get some activity in before open homes in most areas.
