Protecting a Legacy

Growing in the top of the mighty Northland Kauri, Tane Mahuta is an entire forest of trees that have made their home in the upper branches. There are even other mature Kauri up in the crown, healthily growing and producing seeds up in the enormous boughs of the forest giant.

Protecting this ancient tree there is an entire infrastructure. Apparatus to protect the tree and its siblings from the fungus that causes Kauri DieBack including boardwalks and railings, and shoe cleaning sprays and brushes. There is an army of supporters to help. When I was up there a few weeks ago a supervising guardian bellowed at an entire tour group that had pushed their way quickly through the shoe cleaning process, stopping them and making them go back.

I got chatting to one of these protectors, he told me that at the top of Tane Mahuta there is a bowl of gum or resin that has formed at the top of the trunk where branches meet. This resin bowl holds water and other debris, creating perfect growing conditions for other plants. A couple of times a year, DOC workers climb into the crown of the tree to do some pruning – ensuring that roots of some of the other plants in this ecosystem don’t push their way into the resin bowl, puncture it, and cause water to flow down into the inside of the trunk, causing it to rot.

We all are in a position to support others, and be supported. Sometimes the things we value require extra protection. What is also really important is a regular review, be it a bit of a tidy up, a spring clean, or a full on health check.

While on the topic of Northland, I would like to welcome a couple more sales people to our ecosystem!

Blair Chandler is a highly experienced salesperson who has decided on a change of focus, originally working in a boutique commercial brokerage in Auckland Central. After moving up to Waipu, Blair has decided that there is opportunity for him to build a team and a brand servicing this local area, under his branch ‘Chandlers’. It’s always challenging starting something new in a new area, however with a keen marketing eye, connections in the local area, and a high work ethic, the first listing is in. Welcome Blair!

A bit further North now, Rachel Burnard joins us from the outskirts of Whangerei. She is focusing on building her ‘Village Real Estate’ business in her home town of Hikurangi. With plenty of local and even international experience, a local community focus, and some big plans, I know that Rachel will become THE go-to in the area. She has already started marketing new listings, and I know that she will move from strength to strength as her market position grows. Welcome Rachel!
