Michael’s thoughts on marketing

Michael Jackson.
He was The King of Pop.
Being school holidays, I took a couple of hours out this week with the family to go watch a movie. Being in a house full of musicians and an ex-DJ, ‘Michael’ seemed like it might be something we could all enjoy – seems it is possible to keep everyone happy…
I got a marketing lesson that I wanted to share with you.
Michael Jackson had an idea that he wanted to fill stadiums and perform in front of as many people as possible, but despite the recommendations of people who ‘knew better’ in the industry, Michael Jackson did not want to advertise heavily. This is why.
His belief was that if he made the best record possible, and produced high quality music videos, then people would want to see him and his show, and the stadiums would fill.
People would want to see the show because they bought the record, saw the videos, and heard the songs on the radio.
And it worked. He filled stadiums and, according to the movie, did not need massive marketing campaigns.
I was thinking about how we might relate to us, and I think I got it.
Think about how it would feel (or how it does feel for some of you!) to switch from a hustle business to an attraction business. It doesn’t happen overnight, but if you sell the houses, do great work, get creative with your property marketing, and I will say it again, sell the houses, you will become attractive and people will want to work with you.
You can’t get this straight away, but I have seen people achieve an attraction business in just 2 or 3 years. They didn’t do it by relying on branding and telling people how good they were… it was through great work.
I have also seen people belabour branding and websites, working under a belief that a pretty logo or colour scheme or occasionally sharing some stats will magically sell houses for them.
It doesn’t really work.
Letting your track record, your work history, your results, and your process speak for you does. Perform to a high enough level so there can be no doubt who is Real Estate Royalty in your suburb.
Doing the work that directly leads to sales – that is what builds your reputation, and is the absolute priority.
