Take Back Control Of Your Mind.
No, I have not been listening to Pink Floyd… or Rage Against the Machine, I have been listening to Tom Panos.
This is my third installment where I am talking about how to handle the uncertainty that we are dealing with.. We had the pleasure of welcoming Tom back this week for another valuable coaching session with our team. He asked what we were finding, and I mentioned uncertainty. His answer was to take back the control of your mind, and your actions.
As I sat down to write, I started thinking about some of the standout biographies I have read about people who really mastered their minds in highly uncertain, dangerous, frightening situations. Viktor Frankl, Gandhi and Nelson Mandela came to mind.
Despite the impossible situations they each dealt with, they maintained their agency. They took control of their mind.
See, we can go on and on about the terrible market and tariffs and policy and let it affect us and give up. Or we can take back control.
What I am talking about is where we place our ‘locus of control’. That is the term used in the writing around this topic.
An ‘internal locus of control’ is where we believe that our actions and efforts directly affect outcomes.
An ‘external locus of control’ is where we believe external forces or luck are responsible for what happens in our lives.
Research suggests that what you want is to develop an internal locus of control. It is better for you in every area of your life.
The amount of control and agency that you have is actually terrifying. The possibilities are endless. We have the same number of days and hours as the people who shape history.
I spoke to an agent recently who sold 12 houses in one week last month. I spoke to another who made $180,000 last month. They are probably looking for tax havens, not worrying about tariffs. They don’t believe they got lucky. They worked for those results.
We all know what we need to do to get results. I know that if we do those things we will get the results we want.
Take the power back. We have the ability to change our lives.
Gender Bias
As I wrote this I noticed a strong gender bias in my reading. After compiling a list of the influential biographies I have read, I can see a heavy gender bias in my reading. I am doing something about that, in the meantime, I am looking for recommendations. Got a recommendation? I’d be grateful if you replied and shared it with me.
